Fixtures/Availabilities 19.02.2012

It was a shame the games were off today but it was definitely the right decision with the ground still very hard and slippery well into the afternoon.

Thanks to all those who attended the training session at the Wandle Centre where we got to practice our ice-skating skills as much as our football.

It was good to get some action of sorts (albeit only for 45 minutes) and I have been spending time sorting out one or two loose ends (buying a pair of keeper's gloves for the club, a replacement red shirt and making sure our pitch bookings coincide with home games etc.)

The big freeze looks set to end this week and I would hope that we will now have a clear run until the end of the season.

The B's are going to be at it until at least the end of April now as they have got the most league games left and are still in two Cups. Hopefully we have enough eggs in the basket to compete in all of those games.

The A's have some big league games coming up but the big one is the Cup semi-final on Sunday March 4th. Hopefully everyone is back from skiing - all in one piece - then.

The C's have got a couple of long journeys to Wallington and Beddington coming up but next year should see them in the Southern Sunday League which, as we know is more Clapham/Tooting/Raynes Park based.

We currently have two tricky league games next Sunday but if we have the numbers we will go up to three.

Lost Property/Bookings

The kit has grown a bit in recent weeks with a blue Nike thermal top, a pair of black thermal gloves and a Lotto rain jacket all having been picked up after games. If you have lost any of these (or any other items) then give me a shout.

Meantime, going in the other direction, we have one of the new red shirts. This may be with the light blue shirts but if you have accidentally held onto it then please can you let me know.

Regarding bookings, the League have found out that clubs have been contacting refs after picking up bookings to ask them not to put them through. The League have told me/the clubs that this is not allowed and all bookings must be put through.

We are doing well as a club but have picked up 2 or 3 bookings too many for unsporting behaviour/dissent. Please try not to get involved in any slanging matches etc. and to avoid any altercations with opposition players or refs.

I know it can be a dogfight but let's try to make sure we give a good account of ourselves before, during and after the game.

Match Fees: Fines

As promised match fees will come down from 01.01.2012 until the end of the season to £5 for 90 mins, £2.50 for 45 and none for taking the kit
(subject to no extraordinary costs arising).

However my telephone bill has taken a hammering over the last two months (£50 alone from football texts/calls in October and more than likely more in November).

Therefore as from 01.01.2012 there will be a system of fines in place for any incidences of maladministration on your part.

These will be as follows:

1. Failing to confirm by text or email by 8 p.m. on Wednesday - 50p
2. Texting or calling for confirmation of details after Thursday lunchtime - 50p
3. Failing to return your shirt to the kit bag - 50p
4. Calling me at any time to borrow shorts, socks or shinpads* - 50p
5. Calling me for assistance with a lift on Sunday morning (i.e. not arranging on Thurs, Fri or Sat) - £1
6. Failing to give notice by 10.00 a.m. on Saturday if suddenly unable to play (unless due to personal accident but not due to a football injury) - 50p
7. Arriving more than 20 minutes after meet time two weeks in a row - 50p
8. Arriving more than 10 mins after meet time for a game where we have to put up nets - 50p
9. Not wearing white shorts and socks (but only when specifically asked to do so on the blog) - 50p

*Stand-in players exempt

The above fines will be put on the blog when the teams are posted on the Thursday and will be collected by the captains on the Sunday.

Just a reminder, at the final whistle, to make sure:

a) your shirt goes back in the bag
b) we hold onto the match ball
c) take down and return the nets/corner flags (if at home) and keep hold of the pegs

Sorry to be fussy but the above will save me from:

a) chasing down missing shirts in the week
b) having to buy replacement footballs
c) having to buy new pegs for every home game

Quite Important - Selection 2011/12

OK guys, I think we are OK for numbers now. With 5 or 6 new players having been added, and one or two others having returned, I think we have sufficient numbers in all outfield positions.

We need one more keeper though so if anyone knows a specialist keeper then let me know. There will be a regular spot between the sticks in one of the teams for the lucky person.

We have teams in Divs 2 and 4 of the Southern Sunday League and Div 9 of the Morden and District League.

Don't worry about the strength of the divisions. The standard will be OK when you consider that all three teams will be playing one-team clubs (i.e. 1st teams) who will put out 14 per game, and who train midweek.

As always we will have small squads (i.e. three 17 - 18 man squads) with 12 - 13 players in the matchday line-ups.

We know that the Morden and District League is very strong from last season and I know that there are teams in our division who will give us tough games. There won't be much between the standard in that team and Div 4 of the Southern Sunday League.

Once we get going (and start losing players through injury/illness and other commitments) I am sure we are going to be pushed hard enough. Like I say, the big squads that our 'one-team club' opponents will have will give us plenty to think about.

One thing I would like this season is to see more competition for places and no-one automatically assuming that they will play for certain teams.

Everyone should realise that they are playing for the club and everyone should play as and where required.

I keep a very close eye on the contribution everyone makes and if we are going to win things then we need everyone in all three teams to earn their places.

I am not going to commit myself to a selection policy because in the past I have had it thrown back at me by players complaining about which teams they are in.

I am well aware of the contribution everyone makes on and off the field. And let me make it clear that players who don't contribute on and off the field may well find themselves out of favour.

So if you want to hold down a place AS A MINIMUM you need to:

1. Confirm your availability by Wednesday each week
2. Establish if, where and when you are playing before the weekend
3. Make sure you are at the ground at the appointed time
4. Participate in pre-match preparations i.e. putting the nets up and warming-up
5. Respect your captain/Manager, the referee and opposition
6. Give 100% to the team in ALL circumstances
7. Observe the laws and spirit of the game
8. TAKE THE KIT EVERY 7/8 GAMES AND AT LEAST TWICE A SEASON
9. Get on with your captain/teammates, referee and opponents.

The only other thing I will say is that, as in previous seasons, we will inevitably have more players wanting to play in midfield and up front than at the back.

No-one is guaranteed 90 minutes every week but I think we may well see 7 or 8 midfielders/forwards in the match day line-ups. With that midfielders/forwards, you need to accept that you are more likely to be subbed now and again.

Both Leagues operate compulsory player registrations. Its a condition of the FA who require that all players must be registered before they can play in any FA affiliated Leagues.

Season 2010/11 Honours

It was the end of season game/awards evening yesterday and there was no separating the A's/C's against the B's at the final show-down.

Charlie C, back playing for the A's/C's, really went out with a flourish.

With the smell of beer and food in his nostrils he really got a second wind as he pulled off several great saves in the end-of-season game and penalty shoot-out.

The A's and C's capitalised on a slow start from the B's (struggling to come to terms with the 3 o'clock k.o.) with goals in the first five minutes from Charlie L and Pete.

But the B's showed us what they were made of in the second half, hitting back through Paul K and Gez.

With Barca - Man U awaiting us (on tv in the pub) extra-time was forfeited and the last action of the season went to a penalty shoot-out.

Charlie pulled off his heroics to foil his B team team-mates and it was left to the the A's and C's to lift the imaginary trophy.

Thanks to everyone who came to the pub for our end-of-season gathering.

Looking back at 2010/11, all three teams challenged for honours but all three lacked the consistency to go the distance.

The problem we have is that we need a real super-human effort in any one of the three teams to overcome the one-team clubs who have squads of 18-19 to mount a League or Cup campaign.

Having challenged for honours on three fronts it would be good if we could go forward with three teams next season. But we will have to see what June/July and August bring because we didn't really have enough players to put out three good teams at a time this season.

Congratulations to the awards winners and well done to EVERYONE who played in what, at times, seemed like more of an endurance test than a football season. Everyone got behind each other and we always tried to play good football, unlike some of the teams we played who just tried to bully us.

But at the same time we also played against some very good teams, which was good.

Season 2010

Hi everyone

The new season will shortly be upon us and it won't be long now until we are rushing headlong into the season's fixtures.

The A's and B's are re-entered in the Sportsmans League and the C's are setting out into unknown territory in the shape of the Morden and District League.

The Sportsmans League starts on Sunday September 5th and the C team get stuck into the Morden and District League on Sunday September 12th.

You can view our divisions and fixtures at Divs 2 and 3 of the Sportsmans League and Div 9 of the Morden and District League at www.football.mitoo.com.

Various operating costs (e.g. League fees, London FA affiliation, pitches) have gone up but I will try to keep signing on and match fees the same as last year.

Subject to extraordinary circumstances (e.g. club fines, League appointed linesmen, abortive pitch costs) the fees will be as follows:

Registration £5 but free if you come pre-season training
Training £5 a session (pre-season and mid-season)
Match fees £6 for 90 mins, £3 for 45
Bookings £8
Sendings-off £25 - £100

I trust you will be OK with the above given the cost of running the teams i.e.

Pitch hire (£65 - £100 per pitch)
Refs fees (£35 per match)
League fees (£15 per month per team)
London FA affiliation (£75)
Fines for late kick-offs/no corner flags/club linesman etc (£5 - £20 each)

We put in some impressive performances at the end of last year (e.g. v The Ship, Valtaro Wasteels, Wessex Rangers etc.).

I hope you will all be up for playing in 2010/11 and that we can get the trophy cabinet back in use come the end of the season.

End of Season Honours 2009/10; Next Season

No silverware this season but it wasn't for a lack of wins in the C's who finished runners-up in Div 5 only for Notting Hill to return from having withdrawn from the League to claim three points for a game they previously forfeited.

Anyway enough of the silly season. Here are the winners of our club awards for the Season 2009/10:

I've covered the main talking points of 2009/10 in 'Secretarial Feedback' below.

The A's did well to finish mid-table in Div 2 after having been promoted two divisions at the end of 2008/9. Paul Beavis got us off to a reasonable start with wins against Old Sergeant in the League and Dynamo Clapham and Simon Ridge in the Cup before he went in search of fake silverware in Essex.

In the second half of the season Rich took over the helm and the team came under attack (verbally) by Notting Dale who sledged their way to six points in a hard fought double header.

The latter part of the season was about consolidation really as we were forced to get new faces in for those who had gone missing in action (Paul, Andy K, Jim etc.). In footballing terms we were a match for the top teams but we will need to be a bit more cut-throat if we are going to turn good performances against the likes of Notting Dale and Raynes Park into points.

After winning Div 5 in 2008/9, half the B team left London, had babies or took up working on Sundays. Thankfully loyal servants Gary, Daron, Charlie and Eric helped us to wins against Razors and London Rhinos while new players played their part. Things hit a low in October in our first round cup game against Tooting Cons. Tooting went down to nine when a few screws came loose and we looked to have won when Hugo broke the net from 6 yards. The ref disallowed the goal, deeming that it had flown over and not through the net (even though there was a big hole in the net under the bar where the ball had clearly gone through). The game went into extra-time and with the Tooting players and supporters gearing themselves up to take on the world and his wife they kept us out for 30 minutes and went on to win the penalty shoot-out.

In the second half of the season the team was strengthened by the arrival of Alex and we beat the weather on a couple of occasions to record back-to-back wins against Lambeth United. The best was saved till last though when we scooped great wins against high flying Sporting Club Santar and Valtaro Wasteels. The last game saw us exact revenge on Tooting Cons with a 4-2 win - even if we had to run for cover again in the process.

The C's started with nothing, flirted with Cup and League success but ultimately finished empty-handed. Given that it was an entirely new team with mostly new players, to only lose 5 games all season was a great achievement. Aaron and Jamie lead us to good wins against Inter Yalamb and Wessex Rangers which helped us to the top of the table but narrow defeats against Notting Hill and a QPR-looking ASB saw us pegged back to third.

Our Cup quarter-final against Real Northern unearthed some real gremlins. Stretched for players I got a couple of extras in. A great all-round team performance resulted in a 3-0 win against the Div 4 league leaders. Real Northern resorted to the rule book and three weeks later the result was overturned because we'd played ineligible players.

I was pleased that there no hard feelings within and everyone who turned out for the C's gave a great account of themselves. There were plenty of match winning performances from Ashley, Leon Crooks, Nick, Shaun, Maurizio etc. and other than a couple of narrow defeats against semi-professional looking ASB and Supercala teams we outplayed all the teams.

Next season will see the bulk of the team play as the B's in Div 4 and if we can stick together then we should challenge in the League and Cup.

I'll give you more information on next season when the divisions are decided but as it stands the A's and B's are re-entered and I will enter the C's if 45 or more players sign up.

I am hoping to arrange one or two friendlies on the cinder pitches on Clapham Common which remain in use all year round and we will also have three pre-season training sessions on Clapham Common from mid-July prior to playing 11 aside pre-season friendlies on grass from mid-August.

The Golden Boot 2009/10

OK guys, with Rae, Sebastian and the rest of last year's 1st team having moved onto pastures Kew, the Golden Boot could be a slightly more even contest this year.

Remember only League and Cup games count but if you play a friendly DUE TO a League game being cancelled then those goals are included.

Oh, and don't worry if you never make it past the half way line. There are also awards for each team's Player of the Year, Captain's Player of the Year and the Club Man of the Year. Plus I might even buy a pair of bloomers for the Best Own Goal etc.

Results/Honours 2008/9

I am pleased to confirm that the B's have been crowned Champions (of Div 5) following straight wins against Tooting Bec, MDP and Supercala in their last three league games.

While second placed Simon Ridge were snapping at their heels, the B's clinched the wins which saw them win the league by two points - Simon Ridge having drawn a game when we won earlier in the season. (p.s. Don't be mislead by the current league table on mitoo - Si Ridge won their last game against Tooting Bec bringing them to within two points of our total).

We had some near arse-over-tit experiences (e.g. 5-4 and 2-1 v Croydon, 2-1 v Wessex and 4-3 v Star) but the team spirit was great throughout and great determination throughout the entire squad saw us lose only two competitive games all season (0-1 to Simon Ridge and 1-2 to Dynamo Clapham).

There are 15 Div 5 Winners trophies for the 15 players who played the most games.

I am pleased to inform the 1st team squad that you also won trophies for finishing runners-up in Div One. I will give the trophies (15) to Russell who can hopefully distribute them to the 15 players who featured in the 1sts over the course of the season.

For the benefit of those who weren't at the end-of-season do on May 8th the individual award winners were:

Season 2007/8 Post Humous Awards

Season 2007/8 belongs in the history books now but it goes down as the most successful one in Kew Antiguan history. A league title and Cup represents a decent return from three teams although in many ways, the B team who were trophy-less this year, deserve the most credit for doing very well in their league, mostly against 1st teams, and with practically a different XI each week.

That said, Joe has created a ruthless machine in the 1st team, where no-one player is better than the sum of its parts. The A team under-achieved in the league but if we can support Paul (Beavis) next season they should be there or thereabouts and like I say, the B team have punched above their weight and are, in my opinion, deserving of just as much recognition as the other two teams.

That's it. Time for the shooting to stop. We've achieved a record number of goals ...... and a record number of goalscorers too. Its amazing that 42 registered players (including 3 keepers) have provided us with 52 goalscorers ! Congratulations to 1st team trio Stuart, Sebastian and Alex who have spear-headed the race from start to finish.

Elsewhere there are lots of pretenders to the Golden Boot and players with 100% goals per games ratios but with the season running from September till May you've got to keep it up all year ..........

2006/7 Season Review

Season 2006/7 reaped a bumper crop of players and goalscorers but proved fruitless in terms of titles and trophies.

Just one year on from starting two teams the KAFC Empire spread across South West London during the summer of 2006 cajoling, commandeering and press-ganging Brits, French and other purveyors of the beautiful game with the effect that we had three league teams by the start of the season.

Early signs were worrying with low-scoring draws against Willoughby and Hampstead Heathens being the pick of our pre-season performances. Careful tinkering of the fixture programme ensured we only had to get two teams out during the first few weeks of the new campaign.

The 1sts failed to set the league alight as the regulars spent the first few games looking around for the previous year's star performers. With just 4 points from their first 9 league games it looked like we had a job on our hand sustaining one team yet alone three. Things started to look a bit better towards the end of the year though as the 1sts claimed the scalp of teams from two divisions above (Roehampton Club and Croydon Red Star) in two hard fought Cup games.

It was a similar story for the Reserves who were suffering from the biggest identity crisis since
Gazza became G8, as their squad and new skipper (John) took time to come to the fore. We picked up wins against the bottom teams to keep us low-mid table but suffered a couple of heavy defeats against the big guns (2-6 v Supercala, 1-9 v Eagles). On the flip-side we picked up some very good players (Gary Howorth, Jon Holder, Paul Cypher to name a few) who would go on to make a major contribution in the second half of the season.

Ironically the new 'A team' got off to the brightest start in the league. After going down 5-1 to eventual champions Portland, the A's picked up impressive wins against De Novo, Tooting Park Rangers, Zamalek and Wandsworth Warriors with a winning mixture of exuberant youth (Lee, Ashley etc) and seasoned campaigners (Adam Darke, Olivier and Rudi).

The New Year brought a change of fortunes for all three teams. The 1sts benefitted from more consistent and stronger line-ups as some good new arrivals (Scott, Dan, Russell) percolated up through the teams. A 4 match winning sequence in the league elevated us up the league and we were unlucky to go out of the Cup at the quarter final stage to Fulham Scumbags from the Division above. Having secured our survival in Div 3 by mid-March there were some award winning (BAFTA not FIFA) performances at the end of the season but it was the 'extras' (Nick Meadows, Iain, Lubos) who particularly caught the eye.

Some very strong 2nd team line-ups (even without the 'infamous' Danny Maddix) were on the right side of a few embarrassingly heavy wins in the second half of the season (e.g. 9-0 v Tooting Bec Rovers). Despite wholescale changes every week, skipper John engendered a good team spirit and work ethic and the team were a match for the top teams in the division (e.g. 1-1 v Devas, 3-3 v Crown). With only one other Reserve team in the division, our final position (7th out of 13) was not to be scoffed at.

The A team had some very tough fixtures in the second half of the season. Trips to Purley and Croydon proved a bit of a test, footballing-wise as well as culturally, but we generally met every adversity face on and the hard core (Pete, Lee, Adam, Neil) were an example to the others in terms of commitment, ability and sportsmanship. Had we been in the Sportmans League, as I would have liked, I'm sure we would won more but hopefully that prize awaits us next season.

The season was capped by a couple of romping wins against former Kew Antiguan midfielder, Stef's, Dutch XI. The tourists had a punishing schedule (all day drinking Friday and Saturday) and shattered the myth of 'total football'. Oh well, I suppose there are plenty of other diversions in Amsterdam ........ that, or Stef's Denis Bergkamps were all scared to fly over.

In the race for the Golden Boot, A team Garry became Public Enemy No. 1 for missing a few chances and there were a few pretenders to Terry's mantel piece. Rich haunted oppositon defences (and our own strikers alike) with 13 1st team goals and Gary Howorth and Charlie stormed into the charts with 17 and 15 goals each. It was lucky 19 again for Terry though who picked up the Golden Boot for the second time in succession.

......................... finally, I would like to apologise for the lack of End of Season Bash this year. I didn't have time to arrange it this year but hopefully we can get together for a bonding session before we kick off the new season.

Directions to Marble Hill Park, Richmond Road, Twickenham

We will be using Marble Hill Park, Twickenham as one of our home grounds this year.

By train :

The park is five minutes from St Margaret's (BR) which is between Richmond and Twickenham 25 minutes from Clapham Junction and 15 minutes from Putney. As you come out of the station (St Margaret's) turn right and at the bottom of the railway bridge you will come to Crown Road. Walk down Crown Road (400m) and Marble Hill Park is 200m to your left at the end of Crown Road on the other side of Richmond Road. To get to the changing rooms just follow the single lane road to the car park, walk past the adventure playground and children's nursery and you will be there.

By car :

From London, you will need to get to Richmond. Cross Richmond Bridge and turn left at the lights after all the shops, 400 yards from the bridge. Bear round to the left and the park is on your left 200 yards after St Stephens church (on your left) and opposite a pub (can't remember the name).

From the other way (Kingston/Twickenham etc) get into the centre of Twickenham and get onto Richmond Road at the set of lights just past MacDonalds (on your right). The park is on your right half a mile down Richmond Road from Twickenham. You will see it behind the railings/fence just after the Crown pub on your right.

There is a car park in the park (free on Sundays). Just follow the road round to the left and you can park up right by the pitches.

Directions to Prince George's Playing Fields, Grand Drive, Raynes Park

Our 2nd team home ground (and some time 3rd team home ground) is easy to get to.

By train go to Raynes Park (BR) which is the next stop on from Wimbledon out of London, 15 mins from Clapham Junction and 25 mins from Waterloo. Exit the station on the same side as the train down from London and Grand Drive will be in front of you. Take the right fork. 100 yards down Grand Drive you will come to the lights at the junction of Bushey Road. The pitches are on the left on the other side of these lights. Cross at the lights and walk 30 yards to the left and you will come to a gate which leads to the changing rooms (the green hut in the corner of the field).

By car the ground is 400 yards from the 2nd junction off the A3 after the Robin Hood roundabout. This junction is one mile from the Robin Hood roundabout and its signposted to Raynes Park and New Malden.

Turn left at this junction and after 400 yards you will come to the Bushey Road/Grand Drive traffic lights. Turn right at these lights, go 400 yards up Grand Drive and there is a track which takes you into the ground between a pair of semi-detached houses on your left. (Its signposted 'Raynes Park Vale FC'). From this track you can actually drive across the ground to the changing room block which is in the bottom corner of the ground close to the Bushey Road/Grand Drive traffic lights.
